Keeping a hot tub clean takes about 10–15 minutes a week: test and balance the water, add sanitiser, rinse the filter and wipe the waterline. Add a deep filter clean monthly, and drain and refill every three to four months. Irish winters bring a few extra jobs around covers and frost.

Every day you use it

  • Shower before getting in to keep oils and lotions out of the water.
  • Keep the cover on and locked whenever the tub is not in use.

Every week

  • Test the water with strips: sanitiser (chlorine or bromine), pH (aim for 7.2–7.6) and alkalinity.
  • Adjust chemicals as needed, adding them with the jets running.
  • Rinse the filter with a hose.
  • Wipe the waterline and check the cover for damage.

Every month

  • Soak the filter in a filter cleaner overnight.
  • Shock the water to break down organic waste.
  • Clean and condition the cover to protect it from rain and UV.

Every 3–4 months

  • Use a line flush, drain the tub, clean the shell and refill.
  • Replace filters roughly once a year, or sooner with heavy use.

Winter in Ireland

  • Keep the tub running in winter; most have frost protection that circulates water.
  • Check the cover is not waterlogged, as a heavy cover loses heat.
  • If you will not use it for months, have it properly drained and winterised.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change hot tub water?

Every 3–4 months for most households, sooner with heavy use.

Why is my hot tub water cloudy?

Usually low sanitiser, unbalanced pH or a dirty filter. Test the water, clean the filter and shock the tub.

Can I use a hot tub without chemicals?

Not safely. Ozone and UV systems reduce the chemicals you need, but you still need a sanitiser.
