A well-insulated electric hot tub typically costs around €35 to €75 a month to run in Ireland. Most use roughly 3–6 kWh of electricity a day once they are up to temperature, and with Irish electricity averaging around 40c per kWh in 2026, that adds up to roughly €1.20–€2.40 a day. Winter, wind and frequent use push it higher; a good cover and smart settings bring it down.

How the cost is worked out

Daily use Cost per day (at ~40c/kWh) Approx. per month
3 kWh €1.20 €36
4.5 kWh €1.80 €54
6 kWh €2.40 €72

Check your own unit rate on your bill and multiply. Night-rate or smart tariffs can lower the cost if your tub heats overnight; compare tariffs and energy-saving tips with SEAI.

What affects running costs

  • Insulation: full-foam shells lose far less heat than partially insulated or inflatable tubs.
  • The cover: a thick, tight-fitting, locking cover is the single biggest saving.
  • Weather and wind: wind strips heat from the water surface and cabinet. Shelter helps.
  • Temperature setting: each degree higher costs more. 37–38°C is comfortable for most people.
  • How often you use it: lid-off time is when most heat escapes.

How to cut your hot tub bill

  • Replace a waterlogged or damaged cover.
  • Use economy or sleep modes when you are away.
  • Fit a hot tub heat pump, which can reduce heating energy significantly.
  • Clean filters regularly so the pump works efficiently.
  • Put a windbreak, hedge or gazebo on the windward side.

Wood-fired and inflatable tubs

Wood-fired tubs have no electricity cost unless you add jets or a filter; you only pay for logs. Inflatable tubs usually cost more to run than insulated hard-shell tubs, especially from November to March. Compare options in our wood-fired vs electric guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to leave a hot tub on all the time?

For an insulated electric tub used several times a week, yes. Reheating from cold uses more energy than holding temperature.

How much electricity does a hot tub use per year?

Typically around 1,100–2,200 kWh a year for a well-insulated tub, depending on use, size and weather.

Are inflatable hot tubs cheaper to run?

No. They are cheaper to buy but usually cost more to run because they hold heat less well.
