Why a barrel sauna suits Irish gardens

A barrel sauna is the simplest way to get a proper Finnish sauna in your garden. The round shape means there is less air to heat, so it warms up faster than a square cabin, and rain runs straight off the curved roof. Steel bands hold the staves tight, so the timber can swell and shrink with the seasons without leaking heat.

Wood-fired sauna or electric heater?

A wood-fired sauna (sometimes called a wood burning sauna) uses a small stove with a flue through the roof. It needs no electrics and gives soft, fragrant heat, but takes about 45–60 minutes to reach 80°C. An electric sauna heater heats in 30–45 minutes on a timer and is cleaner to run. Most electric heaters of 6 kW and up need their own supply from the fuse board.

Thermowood or cedar?

Thermowood is heat-treated spruce or pine. It is stable, resists rot and costs less. Red cedar is naturally oily, smells lovely and weathers to silver if left untreated, but costs more. Both work well in Irish weather if the sauna sits on a level, well-drained base and the outside is treated once a year.

What base does a barrel sauna need?

A barrel sauna sits on two or three cradles, so it needs a firm, level base: paving slabs, a concrete pad or compacted gravel with sleepers. Allow clear space around a wood-fired stove flue and keep it away from overhanging trees. If you also want a cold plunge tub or a wood-fired hot tub, plan the base for both now.

How much does a barrel sauna cost in Ireland?

Most two to four person barrel saunas cost €5,500–€9,000 for the sauna and heater. Larger saunas with a porch and panoramic glass are €8,900–€11,000. Add delivery, any groundwork and an electrician for electric models. See all saunas for sale in Ireland to compare with infrared and cabin saunas.

    Barrel sauna questions

Can’t see your question? Ask us directly and we’ll get back to you.

How long does a barrel sauna take to heat up?

An electric barrel sauna takes about 30–45 minutes to reach 70–80°C. A wood-fired barrel sauna takes 45–60 minutes, depending on the weather and how dry your logs are.

Will a barrel sauna leak in the rain?

Not if it has a proper roof. Most barrel saunas sold for Irish and UK gardens come with bitumen shingles or a rubber membrane over the top staves. Keep the steel bands adjusted for the first few months while the timber settles.

Do I need planning permission for a barrel sauna?

Usually not. A barrel sauna behind the house is normally treated like a garden building and is exempt if it stays under the size and height limits. Check with your council if you live in a protected structure or conservation area.

How long does a barrel sauna last?

With a dry, level base and a coat of exterior oil once a year, a good thermowood or cedar barrel sauna should last 15–20 years.

Can I use a barrel sauna in winter?

Yes, that is when most people use them most. Pair it with a cold plunge or an outdoor shower for hot and cold contrast.
