The best sauna heater depends on where your sauna is: a wood-burning stove for an off-grid garden sauna, an electric heater for convenience, and infrared panels for an indoor home sauna.

Best sauna heater by type

Heater Best for Heat-up Running cost
Wood-burning stove Garden sauna, no electrics 45–60 min Logs, a few euro a session
Electric heater (4.5–9 kW) Barrel or cabin sauna 30–45 min About €2–€3 a session
Infrared panels Indoor home sauna 10–15 min Under €1 a session

Wood-burning sauna stove

A wood stove gives the softest, most traditional heat, and it works anywhere because it needs no power. However, you need a flue, dry logs and time to light it. It suits a barrel sauna at the end of the garden.

Electric sauna heater

An electric heater is the most popular choice. You set a timer and the sauna is ready when you are. As a rule, allow about 1 kW per cubic metre of sauna room, so a 4-person barrel sauna usually needs 6–8 kW. In addition, most heaters over 3.6 kW need their own supply fitted by a registered electrician.

Infrared panels

Infrared panels warm your body directly, so they run cooler and cheaper. They suit an indoor infrared sauna, but they don’t give the steam of throwing water on stones.

Sauna stones and safety

Use proper sauna stones, replace crumbling ones each year, and keep a guard rail around the heater. For traditional sauna practice, the Finnish Sauna Society is a trusted source. Also read our sauna temperature guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size sauna heater do I need?

Roughly 1 kW per cubic metre of sauna room, plus a little extra for glass doors or outdoor saunas.

Is a wood-burning sauna stove better than electric?

It is more traditional and needs no power, but it is slower and more work. Electric is more convenient.

Can I plug a sauna heater into a normal socket?

Only very small heaters. Most need a dedicated circuit from the fuse board.

How long do sauna heaters last?

A good electric or wood-burning heater usually lasts 10–15 years with care.
