The basics of hot tub safety are simple: keep the water at or below 40°C, lock the cover when it isn’t in use, supervise children at all times, keep hair and loose clothing away from suction fittings, avoid alcohol, and have the electrics installed by a registered electrician.

Safety checklist
- Locking cover: use a hard-top cover with locking clips every time the hot tub isn’t in use.
- Children: always supervise, keep the water cooler (around 36–37°C) and limit sessions to 10–15 minutes.
- Temperature: never set above 40°C.
- Time: 15–20 minutes at a time for adults, then cool off and drink water.
- Alcohol: avoid it; heat and alcohol together raise the risk of fainting and drowning.
- Medical conditions: if you are pregnant or have a heart condition or high or low blood pressure, ask your GP first.
Suction drains and entrapment
Suction entrapment is rare but serious. It happens when hair, a limb or swimwear gets caught by a suction fitting. Modern hot tubs use anti-entrapment covers and multiple suction points to prevent it. Never sit on or play with the suction covers, tie up long hair, never let children put their heads under water, and replace any cracked or missing cover straight away. Know where the pump’s off switch is.
Safe electrics
A hard-wired hot tub needs its own RCD-protected supply and an outdoor isolator switch, fitted and certified by a registered electrician. Never run a hot tub from an extension lead. Read our guide to hot tub electrical requirements in Ireland for the details.
Water hygiene
Clean water is a safety issue too. Keep chlorine at 3–5 ppm and pH at 7.2–7.6, and shower before you get in. Our chlorine vs bromine guide and hot tub chemicals make this easy.
Slips and steps
Fit sturdy, non-slip steps and a handrail, and keep the surround free of algae. Good lighting helps on dark winter evenings.
For electrical safety, always use a registered contractor. You can find one through Safe Electric.
Frequently asked questions
What age can children use a hot tub?
Many manufacturers suggest waiting until around five years old, with the water cooler and sessions short. Always supervise children.
What is suction entrapment in a hot tub?
It is when hair, a body part or clothing is held against a suction fitting by the pump. Anti-entrapment covers and not sitting on drains prevent it.
Is it safe to use a hot tub when pregnant?
Ask your GP or midwife first. Hot water can raise your core temperature, so most advice is to avoid it or keep it lukewarm and short.
Do I need a lockable hot tub cover?
Yes. A locking hard-top cover is one of the best ways to keep children and pets safe.
