Inflatable and plug-and-play hot tubs run from a standard 13A outdoor socket. Most hard-shell hot tubs need a dedicated 16A or 32A supply, hard-wired with RCD protection and an isolator, installed and certified by a registered electrician. Which one you need depends on the tub’s heater and pumps.

13A vs 16A vs 32A at a glance

Supply Typical tubs What to know
13A plug-in Inflatables, some small plug-and-play spas Heater often switches off when jets run; slower to heat
16A Many 2–4 seat hard-shell tubs Dedicated radial circuit, hard-wired
32A Most 5+ seat tubs and premium spas Heater and pumps run together; check your fuse board capacity

Who can install it?

In the Republic of Ireland, use an electrician registered with Safe Electric, who will certify the work. In Northern Ireland, use an approved electrical contractor. Never run a hot tub from an extension lead.

What the installation includes

  • A dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, sized for the tub
  • RCD protection (usually 30mA)
  • An outdoor isolator within sight of the tub, at a safe distance from the water
  • Armoured cable, buried or clipped, to the tub’s control box

Frequently asked questions

Can I plug a hot tub into a normal socket?

Only inflatable and plug-and-play models designed for it. Use an RCD-protected outdoor socket and never an extension lead.

How much does hot tub wiring cost?

It depends mostly on the cable run from your fuse board and whether your board has capacity. Get a quote from a registered electrician.

Do I need to upgrade my fuse board?

Sometimes, especially for 32A tubs in older homes. Your electrician will check.
