A traditional sauna is usually set to 70–90°C, and an infrared sauna to 45–60°C. Beginners are best starting at the lower end, around 70°C in a traditional sauna, for 8–12 minutes at a time.

Barrel sauna where sauna temperature reaches 70–90°C

Sauna temperature by type

Sauna Typical temperature Session length
Traditional / Finnish (barrel or cabin) 70–90°C 8–15 min
Wood-fired sauna 70–95°C 8–15 min
Infrared sauna 45–60°C 20–40 min
Steam room 40–50°C, very humid 10–20 min

Why the top bench feels hotter

Heat rises, so the top bench in a barrel sauna can be 10–20°C hotter than the floor. If it feels too intense, move down a bench rather than turning the heater down.

Humidity matters as much as heat

Throwing water on the stones (löyly) raises the humidity and makes the same temperature feel much hotter. Start with small ladles and wait a minute between each.

How long does a sauna take to heat?

An electric heater takes 30–45 minutes to reach 80°C; a wood-burning stove 45–60 minutes, longer on a cold, wet Irish evening. An infrared sauna is ready in 10–15 minutes.

Safety tips

Drink water, avoid alcohol, and get out if you feel dizzy or unwell. Children should only use a sauna at lower temperatures with an adult. If you have a heart condition or are pregnant, talk to your GP first.

The Finnish Sauna Society is a good source on traditional sauna temperatures and etiquette.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good sauna temperature for beginners?

Around 70°C in a traditional sauna, or 45–50°C in an infrared sauna, for 8–12 minutes.

Is 100°C too hot for a sauna?

For most people, yes. Most saunas are kept between 70°C and 90°C, which is hot enough to enjoy without overdoing it.

Why does my infrared sauna feel cooler?

Infrared panels warm your body directly instead of heating the air, so the cabin reads 45–60°C but you still sweat.

How long should you stay in a sauna?

8–15 minutes per round in a traditional sauna and 20–40 minutes in an infrared sauna, with breaks to cool down.
