An inflatable hot tub is worth it if you want a cheap, low-commitment way to try hot tubbing, mostly in the warmer months. If you want to use it all year in an Irish winter, a hard-shell hot tub is the better long-term buy.

What you get for the money
Popular brands such as Lay-Z-Spa and Intex cost a few hundred euro, set up in under an hour and plug into an ordinary outdoor socket. They are a great way to find out whether you’ll actually use a hot tub before spending thousands on an acrylic hot tub.
The trade-offs
| Inflatable hot tub | Hard-shell hot tub | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | €400–€1,200 | €4,500–€12,000+ |
| Heat-up | 1–2°C an hour | 3–6°C an hour |
| Winter running costs | High, as they lose heat quickly | Lower, thanks to full insulation |
| Lifespan | 2–4 years typically | 10–15 years or more |
| Jets | Air bubbles | Targeted water jets |
Using an inflatable hot tub in an Irish winter
Most inflatables struggle to hold 38°C when it’s 3°C and blowing a gale. Many owners empty them from November to March. If you want year-round use, keep it in a sheltered spot, use a thermal ground mat and a good lid, and expect higher electricity bills.
Our verdict
Buy an inflatable hot tub for summer fun, a rental or to test the idea. If you know you’ll use it most weeks of the year, put the money towards a hard-shell or wood-fired hot tub instead. Want to try before you buy? Look at hot tub hire for a weekend.

Frequently asked questions
How long do inflatable hot tubs last?
Usually two to four years with care. Punctures, pump failures and UV damage are the most common problems.
Can I leave an inflatable hot tub up all winter in Ireland?
You can, but heating costs rise sharply and the pump may struggle in frost. Many owners drain and store theirs over winter.
Do I need an electrician for an inflatable hot tub?
Usually not. Most plug into a standard outdoor socket with an RCD. Never use an extension lead.
Is a Lay-Z-Spa a real hot tub?
It is an inflatable hot tub. It gets water to 40°C and has air bubbles, but it is not as well insulated or as powerful as a hard-shell hot tub.
